Our original non-looping white noise, created with a real fan. A steady, natural sound that masks disruptions and has been trusted for generations. Assembled in the USA. HSA/FSA eligible.

The Original

Sleep that doesn't
wake you up.

The Dohm uses a real spinning fan instead of a digital file or a loop. This creates continuous sound that your brain stops noticing within minutes. Jim Buckwalter built the first one in 1962. Most people who try it never go back to silence.

How It Works

A fan. A housing.
Sixty years of better sleep.

Most white noise machines play a recorded audio file on a loop. The Dohm works entirely differently.

  • 01

    A real spinning fan inside.

Not a speaker. Not a recording. A small mechanical fan creates genuine airflow, the same way a box fan does, in a precisely tuned housing.

  • 02

    The housing shapes the sound.

The Dohm's cylindrical housing and adjustable caps let you control both the tone and volume of the sound. Twist to tune. No app, no menu, no settings to remember.

  • 03

    Never repeats. Not once.

Because it's mechanical, the sound is slightly different every moment. No looping, no pattern, no tell. Your brain stops noticing it after a few minutes, and you stay asleep.

"The original. Built by hand. Copied by everyone. Still better than all of them."

The Lineup

One sound. A few ways to use it.

All Dohm machines make the same real-fan white noise. The difference is in the details.

Why It Matters

Why mechanical
still wins.

Digital machines are good. Fan-based machines are different. Here's what that means in practice.

  • Your brain stops tracking it.

A recorded file, no matter how long, eventually repeats. Your brain is extraordinarily good at detecting patterns, even in sleep. The Dohm's mechanical sound is genuinely continuous, with no loop, no cycle, and no tell. You stop noticing it within minutes.

  • Zero setup, forever.

Turn the dial. That's it. No Bluetooth pairing, no firmware updates, no app, and no settings to lose. Works exactly the same the day you buy it as it will in 15 years. Nothing to charge, nothing to update, and nothing to relearn.

  • You will never need to replace it.

The Dohm is famously durable. Lifespans of 10 to 15 years are standard. We hear from customers who are still using their machines from the 1980s. When was the last time a digital device lasted 40 years?

  • The original, for 60 years.

Jim Buckwalter built the first one in a garage because his wife could not sleep. The design has barely changed because it did not need to. That is not stubbornness. That is sixty years of getting it right, every night.

Fan-based machines use a real spinning fan to create sound mechanically. Digital machines play recorded audio files. The practical difference is that fan-based sound is genuinely continuous. It never loops, never repeats, and has slight natural variation every moment. Digital files, no matter how high quality, eventually cycle. Many people cannot consciously detect the loop but their brain can, which can pull them toward lighter sleep. Fan-based removes that variable entirely.

Yes, through physical controls, not an app. The Dohm has a dial that adjusts speed, volume, and intensity, and an adjustable cap that changes the tone. Opening it creates a deeper, broader sound. Closing it creates a higher, more focused tone. Most people find their setting in the first few nights and rarely touch it again.

Loud enough to mask most household noise at normal settings, including an HVAC unit, street traffic, or a partner who snores. The Dohm operates within safe listening ranges and is not designed to be a maximum-volume machine. For very loud environments, some users run it closer to the bed. For babies, standard distance and volume guidance applies.

You will likely come to prefer sleeping with it, which most users consider a feature. Dependency in a harmful sense is not really how this works. The machine creates a better sleep environment without altering sleep chemistry. People travel with their Dohm, use it at hotels, and maintain sleep quality. Some users say going without it in a truly quiet room is now harder, but that is true of any sleep habit that works.

Fan-based is right for you if you want the simplest, most proven option, already like the sound of a fan, do not want to manage an app or charge a device, or are a light sleeper who has found digital machines do not quite work. Multi-sound is better if you want sound variety, a night light, a timer, or portability. Both work well. The question is what kind of sleeper you are.

A long time. The design is simple and the mechanism is robust. Lifespans of 10 to 15 years are common. We have heard from customers running machines from the 1980s. The fan motor is the only moving part, and it is built for continuous operation. Most people replace their Dohm because they want to, not because it stopped working.
