The queen mattress is the most popular mattress size for American adults. But what makes this bed size so popular? And is it right for you?
Benefits of a Queen Size Bed
Looking for the perfect amount of sleeping space for a single sleeper to sprawl out, or to accommodate a child or pet? Or a bed that’s big enough for a couple but a value to fit a budget and a size to fit a room? The queen may be sized right for you.
Queen size bed dimensions: 60 inches by 80 inches (152.5 centimeters by 203.5 centimeters). For room planning, a king size bed dimensions in feet are 5ft by 6.67ft.
A queen bed provides ample room for two people to sleep comfortably without taking up as much space as a king-sized option. This size is particularly popular because it accommodates most adults comfortably, allowing for enough space to move around without encroaching on each other's sleeping area. Ideal for smaller master bedrooms, guest rooms, or for those who want more sleeping space without overwhelming the room, a queen-sized bed is a versatile choice that meets a wide range of sleeping needs.
A queen sized mattress provides a more comfortable sleeping experience than a twin size or full size mattress, with as much length as a twin XL and 6 more inches of width than a full bed. Because of the extra legroom, it's a great choice for sleepers over 5'5".

Bedroom Size for a Queen Bed
How big your bedroom should be to fit a queen size bed depends on how much furniture you have as well as the size of your bed frame, but a good rule of thumb is that a bedroom should be at least 9.5 feet by 10 feet to comfortably house a queen size bed and frame.
Before buying a queen mattress, make sure that you measure your bedroom and tape out the space the bed will take up on the floor. Ensure you have at least two feet of walking space around the bed frame.
Lesser-Known Queen Sizes
There are two queen sizes which are not considered "standard sizes" but are still sold by some retailers. These are the Olympic queen and the California queen.
The Olympic queen mattress measures 66 inches by 80 inches, adding an additional 6 inches of width. This is a good option for people who feel a standard queen is too narrow, but who don't have room for the 16 inches of width added by a king bed.
The California queen mattress measures 60 inches by 84 inches. It's the queen equivalent of a California king in terms of adding 4 inches of extra length. This is helpful for people with bedrooms too narrow to fit a California king mattress but who appreciate a seven-foot-long bed.
Be aware that with a non-standard mattress size, it may be difficult to find bedding accessories (bed frames, foundations, sheets, blankets, etc.) that fit your Olympic or California queen. It's best to purchase your non-standard queen from a retailer that also sells accessories for it.
