Hot, Steamy Showers & Sleep

We’ve all had one of those nights where you can’t sleep no matter what you do. Maybe you’ve tried hot tea/milk, exercise, reading a book, over the counter sleep medications and you still find yourself lying in bed, wide awake! Now this might sound silly, but the missing piece to your bedtime puzzle could just be a nice, warm shower. Now hold on, hear us out…

According to Time Health “A hot morning shower can wake you up and even boost creativity, according to some research. But if you want to improve your sleep, showering at night is the way to go.” When should you shower, you might ask? Well that’s a great question. The best time to shower is in the early evening, at least an hour and a half before bed. This will heat up your body temperature (which keeps you awake) and will allow enough time for your body to cool down (which stimulates sleep).

Some people might believe taking a shower right before bed will have the opposite effect, and this could be true. Showers that are too cold or too close to bedtime can cause your body to wake up and throw off your circadian rhythm. If you are someone who enjoys a morning shower to help “wake you up”, make sure you are using the proper shower temperature. A warm or hot shower in the morning will make you sleepy, hence why you want to do this before bed, however, according to a hot shower and then switching to cold for approximately 30 seconds before getting out will help stimulate your senses and wake you up!

Of course, we think a Yogabed will help wisp you away into a deep, peaceful slumber, but if you’re at a hotel, friends or relatives house and you don’t have that luxury (you should probably recommend it), a warm shower before bed might just help you fall asleep, no matter what mattress you’re sleeping on. Now, we can’t promise peaceful slumber, but sometimes a little sleep is better than no sleep at all.
